Tixel Treatments Taunton

Tixel Treatment discussed by Dr Paul Baines, Taunton, Somerset

Tixel is a skin rejuvenation treatment which tightens and contours areas of skin. The procedure has been designed to safely treat many facial concerns including improving lines and wrinkles. It uses tiny heated cones on a metal plate that are pressed across the area being focused on to stimulate collagen, tighten the skin, improve the appearance of scars as well as ensuring the skin can absorb topical creams and products to help different skin types. A Tixel treatment delivers heat energy directly onto the skin's surface and this promotes the top layer of skin to naturally rejuvenate in the days and weeks after the treatment.

Tixel is probably the most advanced fractional thermo-mechanical procedure for the skin which results in multiple anti-ageing improvements for tone, texture, lines, wrinkles and a refreshed and radiant appearance.

What is Tixel?

Tixel is a relatively new rejuvenation treatment which can be used to tighten the skin, improve the appearance of scars, lines and wrinkles, and as well as ensuring the skin can absorb topical creams and products to aid different skin types. Tixel uses a heated metal plate to deliver heat energy directly to the skin's surface and this leads to the skin going through its natural rejuvenation process after the treatment, leaving bright, tight and fresh new skin cells in the days and weeks after.

How does Tixel work?

A Tixel treatment uses the heat to rejuvenate, resurface and tighten the skin in a process known as ‘thermal fractional skin rejuvenation. There are varying treatment settings which can be used depending on your skin type and the results you want to achieve.

Tixel works in a similar way to a chemical peel or laser resurfacing. The heat destroys any damaged skin cells on the surface which subsequently encourages new skin cell rejuvenation through the skins natural healing process.

What are the different Tixel settings?

There are three main settings for Tixel; ablative, non-ablative and ‘open channel.’

The most intense treatment is ablative, moving to non-ablative and then to open channel which is the mildest setting.

Ablative is the most intense treatment setting with results similar to CO2 laser resurfacing, but with less downtime. The skin will look red and inflamed after an Ablative treatment and will take a minimum of 5 – 7 days to naturally rejuvenate and heal. At this highest level, after one session, results are comparable to those of a fractional CO2 laser resurfacing treatment or deep chemical peel.

Sublative is recommended for darker skin types where full ablative isn’t suitable. This setting will achieve similar results as Ablative, however, more sessions are needed over a period of time (3–6 treatment sessions) to achieve the same results.

Open Channel is a form of mesotherapy which subsequently allows your skin to naturally absorb sterile antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, or topical creams and serums to aid different skin concerns such as pigmentation and acne and or acne scarring. The downtime for Open Channel is minimal with hardly any impacts on the visual appearance of your skin.

All 3 Tixel settings stimulate your skins natural collagen production, which in turn tightens the skin, giving it a fuller and fresher appearance and feel.

A good clinician will assess your skin, talk to you about your concerns and adapt a Tixel treatment to your skin, often mixing ablative and open channel treatment settings dependent on the results you want to achieve in different areas.

What happens during a Tixel treatment?

The skin is cleansed and then cleaned with an antiseptic wipe before the treatment starts.

When the Tixel machine has reached the settings temperature the treatment then begins.

A small, hot metal plate ( approx. 1cm sq) with tiny pyramidal shapes is pressed repeatedly onto the area that is being treated. The Tixel plate touches the skin for a fraction of a second (between 6 and 18 thousandths of a second) every time it is applied. The touches are so quick that the nerves in your skin don’t register the heat being applied and if they do the plate has already been removed and moved onto the next area.

If the whole of your face is being treated it can take only 15-20 minutes to complete the treatment.

What can I expect during a Tixel treatment?

A small heated ceramic grid with approx. 81 intricate pyramids are on the head of a handheld device is placed onto your skin for a fraction of a second. The thermal energy from the plate is transferred to the outer skin layers which create micron-size pores which is a similar effect to fractional CO2 lasers but without the recovery time, needles or anaesthetic.

After a Tixel treatment, your skin will look and feel tighter, younger and revitalised with a fresh and even skin tone with lines and wrinkles filled out.

Why does Tixel help improve the Décolletage area?

The décolletage, the chest area is often one of the first places to show signs of ageing as it’s not always an area that we look after as well as our faces (cleansing, toning, moisturising and using sun protection. The vast majority of sun damage is done during our childhood, teenage years, and early adulthood and it often includes the décolletage area’ resulting in saggy skin, hyperpigmentation, lines and wrinkles. Tixel can target your décolletage and revitalise and refresh the skin again, making it feel supple and tighter.

Why is Tixel a good treatment for hands and necks?

Saggy skin on the neck and hands can be treated by Tixel as the procedure targets the areas of concern and improves lines, wrinkles, sagging and dilated pores, promoting natural collagen production which fills out and plumps our skin.

Can you reduce acne scars with Tixel?

Tixel is a good procedure for acne sufferers or anyone who has acne scarring and it is now known as one of the best solutions for it in the industry. The Tixel plate delivers heat directly to the skin's surface which is where the redness from acne and acne scars are. The skin then naturally rejuvenates after the Tixel treatment leaving fresh new skin which looks bright and has an even skin tone. Several sessions may be needed to reduce acne scars and a professional and reputable clinician will be able to advise you on this.

What should I expect during my consultation about Tixel?

Your clinician should discuss your skin issues or concerns with you in-depth, asking what treatments you have had previously as well as any medication you may be taking. They should talk to you about how Tixel works, the recovery time, the results, any risks and the number of treatments you may need. They will put together a bespoke treatment plan for you and discuss this with you at length, advising you about what to expect during the treatment and anything you should do to prepare for or do after your treatment. You should always ask if they will be carrying out your treatment and what experience they have, as well as the results they have seen with other patients. You should feel comfortable with them and under no pressure to book your appointment or have your treatment done there and then.

What should I do after my Tixel Treatment?

The downtime, recovery and discomfort time after a Tixel treatment are minimal and your clinician will talk to you about how you may see some areas of dry flaking skin after your treatment as well as how you should care for your skin to further enhance the results.

How long after my treatment will I see the results?

It depends on the patient, some see immediate results and for others, it may take some days to see your skin changes. Improvements in the appearance of your skin can continue for up to 3 to 6 months after your treatment.

How many Tixel treatments is normal?

It depends on which level of Tixel treatment you have and your clinician will advise you on this as it also depends on the results you want to achieve. The number of treatments recommended will depend on the severity of the condition and the amount of downtime and visual impact you are willing to tolerate. Follow up Tixel treatments are normally recommended to maintain the results every 6-12 months.

What downtime should I expect after my Tixel Treatment?

The average downtime for a Tixel treatment is anything between 1-2 days and up to 7 days if you have had a more intense session. The downtime after your treatment can include red, swollen and flaking skin which all then allows your skin to naturally rejuvenate. The downtime of Tixel doesn’t mean a hospital stay or that you can’t carry on with your everyday life it is based more on the visual appearance of your skin.
