Acne is a very common skin condition characterised by comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) and pus-filled spots (pustules).  It usually starts at puberty and can vary in severity.  For the majority it tends to resolve by the early twenties, but it can persist for longer in some people.  Acne is caused when the sebaceous glands (oil producing) produce too much oil, at the same time dead skin cells lining the pores are not shed properly, clogging up the follicles.  These two effects result in a build-up of comedones.  

Acne can be associated with hormonal changes and occurs in both men and women.  There is no cure for acne, however treatments can be very effective in preventing the formation of new spots and scarring.

Scarring following acne is very common.The psychological impact of acne scars should not be underestimated and can be associated with low self-esteem, anxiety and depression.
