Acne

Acne is a very common skin condition characterised by comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) and pus-filled spots (pustules).

  • There are 4 disease-causing factors involved in the formation of acne:

1.  sticky skin cells sitting in hair follicles;

2.  sensitivity of oil glands to hormones;

3.  increased oil production becoming a feeding ground for bacteria: cutibacterium acnes (c.acnes, previously called p.acnes)

4.  inflammation in response to the increase of acne bacteria on the skin.

  • Treatments can be very effective in preventing the formation of new spots and scarring.

  • Scarring following acne is common, therefore the prevention and management of acne occurring is a primary focus.

The psychological impact of acne and acne scarring should not be underestimated and can be associated with low self-esteem, anxiety and depression.
