Hyperhidrosis is a common condition of excessive perspiration. Between 1 and 3 people in every 100 in the UK are affected.  Hyperhidrosis can lead to physical problems such as fungal infection, warts, boils, and worsening of eczema, as well as adversely affecting mental health.

The sweating may affect the whole of the body, or just certain areas such as:

  • armpits

  • palms of the hands

  • soles of the feet

  • the face and chest

  • groins

There is no guidance available to determine what "normal" perspiration is, but if you feel you sweat too much and this has started to interfere with your everyday daily life, you may have hyperhidrosis.

Excessive perspiration can be challenging to treat and may take a while to find a treatment right for you.  Lifestyle changes may help, such as:

  • wearing loose and light clothes

  • avoiding triggers, such as alcohol and spicy foods, that could make your sweating worse

  • wearing black or white clothes to help minimise the signs of sweating.

Medical treatment offered at Dr Baines Skin Health to help with Hyperhidrosis involves injecting the area very superficially with botulinum toxin.  This helps by blocking the signals from the brain to the sweat glands, resulting in a reduction in sweating.

The procedure takes about 30 minutes and effects usually last for 4 to 7 months.

Treatment for both armpits is £450.
