Hyperpigmentation is a condition that causes the skin to darken as a result of excess production of melanin.  Melanin is a pigment that gives the skin its colour. 

There are several types of hyperpigmentation:

  1. Melasma:  can be caused by hormonal changes and may develop during pregnancy.

  2. Sunspots:  These are related to sun exposure over time.

  3. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a result of injury to the skin.
