Are you considering Non-Surgical Aesthetic Treatments?

Are you considering Non-Surgical Aesthetic Treatments? What to consider explained by Dr. Baines of Taunton

What happens to our skin as we age?

The skin’s outer layer, the epidermis, forms a protective physical barrier. The dermis, or middle layer, contains collagen and elastin, which provide strength, firmness and elasticity. It also contains blood vessels, immune cells, nerves and glands that produce sweat and oil. The deepest layer consists of connective tissue and fat.

As the years go by and our skin matures, our skin changes. Our epidermal cells exfoliate naturally, our skin doesn’t retain as much moisture, the collagen and elastin in the middle layer break down and the epidermis, which is the surface layer of the skin thins. As a result, the skin isn’t as firm and less elastic. Fine lines can form around the eyes, deepened lines appear at the corners of the mouth and across the forehead, and skin in various places, such as under the jaw and the neck can start to hang down.

One of the biggest causes of skin damage as you age is sun exposure. Over the years, sun exposure causes fine and wrinkles; pigment spots, baggy skin with a yellow, leathery appearance, and dry, scaly skin, as well as increasing the risk for skin cancer.

Aging is accompanied by a decrease in the natural production of collagen and loss of other important components like collagen fibre, hyaluronic acid, and elastic from the dermis taking away the youthful appearance and freshness of the skin.

How do Dermal Fillers work?

Dermal fillers can help with all the above as a non-invasive, anti-ageing skincare treatment that produces a really natural outcome, look and feel. Dermal filler is a gel which when injected into the skin by a very fine needle, helps fill up the areas affected by volume loss and results in younger and firmer looking skin. They replace the skin’s lost components and reverse the effects of ageing on the skin, as well as reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers are also used to give fullness to the lips, enhance lip definition and volume, and for restoring lost volume in cheeks and the chin area. They treat frown lines, marionette lines, and lines around the eyes. They have also been found to be effective in removing scars and acne.

Dermal Filler Treatments

The treatment normally takes around 30 minutes and should always be carried out by a qualified, experienced and recognised doctor. There are lots of beauty salons now offering non-surgical treatments but we advise that you are very cautious about these. You can walk in for your appointment and be back out again, carrying out normal activities immediately after, as it is a non-invasive and non-surgical treatment.  The treatment is safe and there are no serious side-effects. You can experience some slight discomfort, swelling, and redness on your face but your doctor will talk you through these and what you can expect. These side-effects are temporary and you will quickly see the benefits of your treatment. The results can last up to a year and this depends on the person and the areas you have had treated. Follow up treatments will maintain the results.

What Products and Brands does Dr Baines use?

Belotero - It is always advisable to visit a qualified aesthetic practitioner who is mastered in the art of using Belotero. Treatment can be tailored to your lip shape, with fullness and definition added subtly for a natural approach, and it is always better to go back to your practitioner for a top-up treatment if you feel you need to, rather than have too much product injected during the first visit. Dr Baines is very experienced in the use of Belotero fillers.

Restylane fillers, Skin boosters and skincare are designed to help restore, enhance and refresh your skin. Dr Baines will talk you through the benefits of each of these so you are able to decide if these are the right ones for you.

Profhilo is a special type of dermal filler and is an injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) specifically aimed at reducing skin laxity.   Rather than targeting a specific area such as the cheek or mouth areas, Profhilo produces a uniform improvement of skin texture all over the face, neck décolletage, lips or wherever else it used. With one of the highest concentrations of HA on the market, it is not only boosting and hydrating to the skin, but it also remodels the ageing and sagging tissue.

Unlike some many other skin-boosting treatments, the special properties of Profhilo enable it to migrate along tissue planes, minimizing the number of injections required. The absence of any of any down-time post treatment makes this a highly attractive treatment. Profhilo delivers great results as a treatment on its own or in combination with other aesthetics treatments as the shape of the face is maintained. The subtle treatment is a favourite amongst those looking to try dermal fillers for the first time.

Radiesse is an alternative type of dermal filler and consists of Calcium Hydroxylapatite rather than hyaluronic acid. The extra firming and lifting properties of this product make it ideally suited to support and tighten the jawline, dramatically reducing the appearance of laxity to the jowl. It is a very popular treatment for both male and female clients and the duration of effect can be up to 2 years.

Teosyal is a full range of injectable dermal fillers made of non-animal origin and biodegradable hyaluronic acid. It is compatible with any automated injector pen, making injections more comfortable, more precise and quicker to administer and it is ideal for more sensitive areas such as the lip, reducing the recovery time for these areas. The filler allows greater flexibility and natural facial movement after being administered.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a natural skin component present in everyone’s skin which reduces with age and over time. It acts like a sponge and retains large quantities of water to keep the skin plumped and soft. In the fillers syringes, HA comes in the form of a gel.
