Microneedling in Taunton

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling has been around since the mid 90’s and is a skin rejuvenation procedure that improves the overall texture and appearance of your skin. Tiny needles are used to create punctures in the top layer of the skin which promotes the skin to repair and induce the skins natural collagen production. Dr Baines offers Taunton's best microneedling treatments.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies and is found in muscles, bones, skin, blood vessels, digestive system and tendons. Collagen gives our skin strength and elasticity, as well as encouraging the skin to replace its dead skin cells. As we age our body’s collagen production begins to slow down and this is when fine lines, wrinkles, decreased skin elasticity and sagging skin start to appear. Increasing our collagen production helps our skin to look firmer, increase smoothness, tone and encourages your skin cells to renew and repair as they did when we were younger.

Microneedling is also known as collagen induction therapy.

What happens during a Microneedling Procedure?

A microneedling device normally called a dermaroller covered with fine needles is used to puncture small holes in the surface of the skin, causing a ‘micro-injury’. This then prompts the skin to stimulate collagen production which fills in fine lines, plumps the skin and contributes to a rejuvenated younger look.

A dermaroller is made up of micro-fine needles that range in diameter from 0.5 and 2.5 millimetres and the needles are moved across the skin using the handheld device.

How long does a Microneedling procedure take?

A Microneedling session takes anything from 30-60 minutes and depends on the type of skin condition and the area being treated.

Does Microneedling hurt?

Microneedling is not a painful procedure, however, it can be uncomfortable as the treatment is carried out. The punctures are more like pin-pricks that enter skin deep, however, be aware that a treatment lasting between 30-60 minutes can make your skin feel sore and look red and inflamed after whilst it naturally repairs.

How soon will I see the results from a Microneedling Procedure?

You will see the results of a Microneedling procedure immediately. In the short-term it plumps the skin and makes it look more fresh and radiant, and in the longer term it will appear fuller, fresher and reduce fine lines, wrinkles and skin sagging as the skin starts to produce more collagen.

What are the benefits of Microneedling?

Microneedling can be used to treat and improve facial scars, hyperpigmentation, improve skin tone, texture, plumpness and decrease fine lines and wrinkles.

Microneedling also works well for sunken areas on the skin caused by acne or chickenpox as well as stretch marks breaks by breaking down old tissue and triggering the production of new elastin and collagen for healthier skin.

The safe procedure can also be used on many areas of the body, including the arms, neck, legs, abdomen, back and hands. A qualified dermatologist will customise a Microneedling procedure to suit each patient.

Microneedling also effectively stops the early signs of ageing as well as preventing new wrinkles and fine lines from occurring.

There is no or minimal pain, no downtime after the procedure and you will see immediate and longer-term results.

What are the risks of Microneedling?

Microneedling is a low-risk procedure, however, like any treatment, it can rarely cause possible complications, some of which include; bleeding, bruising, infection, scarring, and pigment problems which are why it is important to always use a professional and qualified dermatologist.

Should you do your own Microneedling at home?

There are now so many at home Dermarollers and Microneedling devices available on the market now, however, there are risks associated with doing it at home. You are creating small insertions in your skin, creating a wound so you should be very cautious about doing it yourself. The wounds can get infected and even permanently scar your skin if overdone so we always advise that you go to a qualified dermatologist for a procedure like this.

Be aware that frequent and over Microneedling can lead to broken capillaries and predispose skin to a plastic look if you overuse it. A qualified dermatologist will know how much your skin can stand and how often and intensely the procedure should be carried out.

What should you expect from a professional micro-needling treatment?

The idea of rolling small needles over your skin might sound uncomfortable, but the procedure starts with your face being anesthetised with topical cream before the treatment is started. The results are immediate and your dermatologist will talk to you about how often you can or should get the treatment done, the benefits, risks and after effects. You should always have a thorough consultation before any treatment and this gives you an opportunity to talk about why you are looking to have a Microneedling treatment and the results you are looking for. A good clinic will always offer a thorough a free consultation and put you under no pressure to go ahead with the procedure. You should always expect to talk through your medical history in a consultation so the dermatologist can assess if you are suitable for the treatment.

How many and how often will you need to have a treatment?

The number of sessions depends on the skin condition, but typically you are looking at 3-5 treatments in 4-6 week intervals with maintenance treatments every 6-9 months. A qualified doctor or dermatologist will adapt the procedure to suit your skin and type and advise you on this.
