What is dermatology?

Dermatology is the diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions and disorders. It is the science behind the pathophysiology of the skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes. In summary, it’s the study of the normal workings of the skin and diagnosis of any abnormal or normal conditions associated with it.

What is a dermatologist?

Dermatologists are trained in microbiology, pathology, biochemistry, physics, physiology, and endocrinology. A dermatologist can have surgical and medical capabilities as part of their training and role.

Advances in technologies mean there are even more choices and treatment options for patients and Aesthetic Dermatology is a fast-growing area to practice in, constantly changing to meet the medical and aesthetic challenges it faces.

Aesthetic Dermatologists improve the appearance of patients' skin, hair, and nails. For example, a dermatologist can help patients reduce fine lines and wrinkles, laxity, age and pigment spots, and improve the appearance of scar tissue. Specialist Dermatologists diagnose and treat more than 3,000 different diseases and conditions. These can include skin cancer, eczema, acne, psoriasis, nail infections, warts, fungal and yeast infections and dermatitis.

How is our skin made up?

You probably don’t think too much about your skin, how it is made up and what it does as it’s just there. Your skin is an incredibly complex organ and is the largest in our bodies. It covers approximately 18 square foot for the average adult. Our skin acts as a barrier, protecting our body from the environment, preventing water loss, controlling our temperature, allowing you to feel touch, pain, and pressure and fights off harmful bacteria. Our skin can reflect the overall health of our bodies and we are now becoming more and more aware of this and how we can improve it.

Our skin is made up of three layers:

1.     The epidermis is the outermost layer of skin and consists of cells called keratinocytes, made from the tough protein keratin which is also in our hair and nails. Keratinocytes form several layers that constantly grow outwards and the exterior cells die and flake off. The epidermis provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone.

2.     The dermis or corium is a layer of skin between the epidermis (with which it makes up the cutis) and subcutaneous tissues. These consist of dense irregular and tough connective tissue and they cushion the body from stress and strain. The dermis also contains hair follicles and sweat glands.

3.     The deeper subcutaneous tissue also known as the hypodermis is made of fat and connective tissue which house larger blood vessels and nerves. It is the innermost layer of skin and the tissue acts as an insulator, regulating body temperature.

What happens to our skin as we mature?

Skin changes are the most visible signs of ageing and include naturally occurring wrinkles, sagging skin, age or pigmentation spots, greying and dull skin tone.

The loss of the elastic tissue (elastin) in the skin causes the signs of aging and our skin can become more transparent, caused by the thinning of the epidermis which is the surface layer of the skin.

Why should we take care of our skin?

Taking care of our skin is important as it is the largest barrier against infection that we have. Keeping our skin clean, healthy and moist helps to keep this barrier strong. When our skin becomes dry or irritated by harsh soaps or lack of moisture, cracks can occur and this is when you are at most risk of infection.

What can we do to take care of our skin?

Follow a simple ‘1, 2, 3’ step process, morning and evening:

1.     Clean your skin daily with a soft facial soap or cleanser

2.     Follow with a toner. Toners help to remove fine traces of oil, dirt, and make-up that you may have missed when cleansing

3.     Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise, this is essential even if you have oily skin. You can choose a moisturiser for dry, combination or oily skin to ensure it matches your skin type

Maintaining our skin's vitality becomes more of a challenge as we grow older and, healthy, toned skin, free from lines and imperfections is hard to achieve. However, we can take steps to make our looks reflect the age we feel rather than the age we are.

What are the advantages of a non-surgical facelift?

Volumising and Lifting Dermal Fillers and Threads will soften lines and offer more extensive facial rejuvenation, lift your skin, hydrate and add volume. Dermal Fillers contain Hyaluronic Acid (HA) which is a sugar-based substance found in your skin. Our stores of HA diminish over time and are replaced by Dermal Filler injections to give you a younger, fresher look.

What is in Fillers?

Hyaluronic acid is a natural skin component present in everyone’s skin which reduces with age and over time. It acts like a sponge and retains large quantities of water to keep the skin plumped and soft. HA comes in the form of a gel in the filler syringes,

Facial Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers will reduce fine lines and wrinkles and increase volume, defining facial features without surgical treatment. The treatment is done in around an hour, depending on the amount you are having done and you can go back to your daily life immediately after.

The treatment is relatively painless as extremely fine needles are used. Dermal fillers give your skin a refreshed and rejuvenated look and feel and can last up to a year.

You can have one area of your face treated and if you are happy with it then you can go back for more. You are charged for the ‘amount of’ filler used and how many areas are being treated so there are no hospital care or anaesthetic costs.

Lip Filler or Lip Augmentation

Dermal fillers can be used very effectively on lips to achieve a variety of results.  Lip margins can be given more definition or volume can be increased, very small amounts of dermal filler can be used to achieve a fuller look without a producing a pouting look. Fine lines around the lips, which are known as lipstick lines, can also be removed or reduced with dermal fillers. Fine needles are used to inject the filler into specific areas of your lips to increase fullness and reduce lines around the lips.

What Dermal Filler Products and Brands does Dr Baines use?

Belotero - It is always advisable to visit a qualified aesthetic practitioner who is mastered in the art of using Belotero. Treatment can be tailored to your lip shape, with fullness and definition added subtly for a natural approach, and it is always better to go back to your practitioner for a top-up treatment if you feel you need to, rather than have too much product injected during the first visit. Dr Baines is very experienced in the use of Belotero fillers.

Restylane fillers, Skin boosters and skincare are designed to help restore, enhance and refresh your skin. Dr Baines will talk you through the benefits of each of these so you are able to decide if these are the right ones for you.

Profhilo is a special type of dermal filler and is an injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) specifically aimed at reducing skin laxity.   Rather than targeting a specific area such as the cheek or mouth areas, Profhilo produces a uniform improvement of skin texture all over the face, neck décolletage, lips or wherever else it used. With one of the highest concentrations of HA on the market, it is not only boosting and hydrating to the skin, but it also remodels the ageing and sagging tissue.

Unlike some many other skin-boosting treatments, the special properties of Profhilo enable it to migrate along tissue planes, minimizing the number of injections required. The absence of any of any downtime post-treatment makes this a highly attractive treatment. Profhilo delivers great results as a treatment on its own or in combination with other aesthetics treatments as the shape of the face is maintained. The subtle treatment is a favourite amongst those looking to try dermal fillers for the first time.

Radiesse is an alternative type of dermal filler and consists of Calcium Hydroxylapatite rather than hyaluronic acid. The extra firming and lifting properties of this product make it ideally suited to support and tighten the jawline, dramatically reducing the appearance of laxity to the jowl. It is a very popular treatment for both male and female clients and the duration of effect can be up to 2 years.

Teosyal is a full range of injectable dermal fillers made of non-animal origin and biodegradable hyaluronic acid. It is compatible with any automated injector pen, making injections more comfortable, more precise and quicker to administer and it is ideal for more sensitive areas such as the lip, reducing the recovery time for these areas. The filler allows greater flexibility and natural facial movement after being administered.

Botox

Muscle Relaxation (Botox) is used to reduce the activity of the muscles that cause lines to form over time. Botox works by temporarily reducing the contractions of these muscles. It provides treatment for frown lines, horizontal forehead lines, periorbital lines, also known as crows’ feet and “kiss” lines around the mouth without any major surgical procedure. Muscle Relaxing treatment can drastically soften the appearance of these lines.
